Section 9: Pricked Patterns
An alternate technique to simply cutting out a design is to cut small perforated lines and then use thread or other material to sew through the holes to create a sewn look on your material. With this method, no design is going to be cut out. You are simply making small incisions into your material to sew into. Some patterns may yield better results depending on the size and intricacy of your image.
- Select your image
- Size it to your liking.
-
With your image selected, click on the
Line Settings button located at the bottom of the software screen
OR right-click on your image and select the "Line Settings" option

The "Line Settings" window will now appear:

-
Click on the "Modify" button next to "Color". This will bring up the "Color" palette.

-
Change the color to any desired color and click "OK".
SUGGESTION: For the purpose of this walk-through, we might suggest selecting Orange. The color may change from job to job. We would, however, suggest making a practice of always selecting the same color to simplify the process.
-
Once brought back to the "Line Settings", click "OK" to apply the color change.

-
Your image will not appear any different...

...until it is no longer selected. When deselected, it will appear with the newly assigned line color.

-
Go to the "Output Settings" by going to "File" menu or by clicking on the icon
-
In the "Output Settings" screen, access the "Cutting Settings" tab and click on "Cutline Settings"

You will now see the "Cutline Settings" window:

-
Click on the "Cutline" option next to the orange (or other selected color you chose to represent dashed lines) and select "Dashed Line". This will re-assign all lines with this color to cut dashed lines.

-
OPTIONAL: Depending on how long you want each dash line cut and how far apart you would like each of these dashed lines, you may alter the "Cut Segment" (length of each cut segment is) or the "Spacing" (space between each cut segment). If this is your first time, you may want to leave these numbers as they are defaulted.
-
Once finished, click on "OK" in the "Cutline Settings" screen and then "OK" in the "Output Settings" to apply all changes.
-
OPTIONAL: You may opt to use one of the line draw tools as previously directed to draw cut lines around your image if you want to cut your image out of the material. An example is seen below of what the resulting cut might look like with a "Rounded Rectangle":

-
OPTIONAL: You may alternately un-group your image and only alter the inside lines with a variant color that you assign to cut in dashed line format. Then keep the surrounding outer frame of your image in the original solid line color. An example is seen below of what the resulting cut might look like with un-grouping and cutting part of your image with dashed lines and the outer frame with solid lines:

- Go through the regular cutting process to cut your image.
-
After your image is cut, sew or lace your desired thread-type material through the holes.
The result will provide a sewn or embroidered look for your project. If you have not selected to create a surrounding shape as directed in step 8 or cut the outer frame of the image in step 9, the actual image will not be a cut-out that is removed from your material, but rather a template to lace your thread-type material through. If you had not cut out a surrounding shape for the image or the outer frame of the image, you may leave it intact to place onto your project, or use as the material base for your project.
